Nigerian Pidgin Language Bible Translation

Nigerian Pidgin Language Bible Translation Project is an ongoing project in which Mercy Christian Ministry International (MCMI) is translating the Holy Bible into a major language of Nigeria and Africa.

“Humm… Nigerian Pidgin?” you may say. “Why Nigerian Pidgin Language Bible?” another person may add. While a third might chip-in the statement…

“A Bible in that “gutter” language? It is an insult on God. In fact the language will pollute English Language and negatively affect the way I want my children to be competent in speaking English.” We, in Mercy Christian Ministry International have actually heard people say these things.

But a fourth person just dropped by, and on hearing about Nigerian Pidgin Language Bible, exclaimed,

“Praise the Lord! God is finally using Nigerian Pidgin Language Bible to bring His Word to the level and language which ordinary Nigerians can understand clearly!”

Yes. That’s exactly what God is using Mercy Christian Ministry International (MCMI) to do.

God wants to speak to the hearts of people and not to their heads.

He wants to speak to them in their heart language. The language they use daily to relate with each other in various areas of their lives.

Think deeply about this scripture in Nehemiah 8:8…

“They (the Levites) gave an oral translation of God’s Law and explained it so that the people could understand it.” – Good News Bible.

Note: The words in brackets are mine, and the words that are bold were made bold by me.

The footnote of that scripture says…

1. TRANSLATION: The Law was written in Hebrew, but in Babylonia the Jews had adopted Aramaic as the language for daily life. Because of this a translation was necessary.

2. They gave…explained; or They read God’s Law and then translated it, explaining.

That’s right. What God did over 2500 years ago in Jerusalem is what He has been doing all over the world by having His word translated into various languages of the world.

He is doing the same thing today by using MCMI to carry out Bible translation of His Word into Nigerian Pidgin Language (NPL).

So, what are Nigerian Pidgin Language (NPL) and Nigerian Pidgin Language Bible (NPLB)?

Nigerian Pidgin Language (NPL)

Nigerian Pidgin Language (NPL) is a very important and popular language in Nigeria.

It’s spoken and understood, as a second or first language, by more than 70 million of Nigeria’s over 150 million population.

NPL is spoken and understood by more people than any other single Nigerian language. Nigeria has over 500 languages.

The three major Nigerian languages are Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo. But more people speak and understand NPL than these languages.

Contrary to mistaken belief some people have, NPL is not the language of non-literates. It has its own unique alphabet and a primer to help speakers of the language learn how to correctly read and write Nigerian Pidgin Language.

Many Nigerians in various places speak and understand the language.

Both literates and non-literates speak the language. These include, workers in government and private institutions, secondary school students and students of higher institutions.

NPL is freely spoken in Nigerian markets, motor parks, stadia (during football matches and other sporting events), and other social gatherings where Nigerians from various tribes come together.

It is spoken by people in major cities of the country and in numerous villages.

We need to add that not only Nigerians living in Nigeria speak NPL, Nigerians in diaspora speak it also. It has further increased its importance by being one of the major trade languages of the West African sub-region. It’s the Pidgin language spoken by more people than any other pidgin language in Africa.
